Show OLD~+PAPERMAKIN - the deckle should bea little thicker than that use on amould for producing thin bank-notes or ledge papers. It is not possible to determine the date of the introduction of bamboo moulds, nor can it be stat atwhat period metal wire succeeded the vegetabl filaments as a material for mould covering. Th Moors established papermalsing in Europe in th tenth or eleventh century, and it is thought tha wire replaced the natural fibre moulds in Europ not long after that time It is recorded that there were "wiresmiths an wiredrawers"in Europe as earlyas1351. Thewiresmiths pounded the metal into lengths and th wiredrawers drew these strips through graduate holes in hard-metal plates, repeating the proces until the desired size was reached In France a company or guild of wiredrawer existed previous to1583, and in London in the yea 1623 there was an incorporated company unde the title of "The Art and Mystery of Drawin and Flattening of Wire." Their motto was: "Lov draws friendship." The artisans at this craft ha their worl.shopsin Crooked Lane before the alterations in London Bridge The earliest watermark that has been foun dates from about 12770 and was apparently forme of wire, so we may surmise that metal wire as mould covering was used previous to this date.
