Show II The Moulds and Deckles Their History and Construction HE moulds and deckles played a mos essential part in the making of paper b hand as they were used to convey th wet, fibrous pulp into sheets of an eve size and thickness. The moulds consisted of frameworlk of wood, not unlike a very shallow box without top or bottom. Many different varietie of wood have been used in centuries past for moul construction but bamboo, oalk, pine, and mahogan have predominated during the entire history o papermaking. The wooden frame was covere with some kind of material,-at first vegetable fila ments and later metal-which would retain th paper fibresand yetallow the water to drainaway The earliest paper was formed by the Chinese and it is thought they used moulds made with amboo framework over which were stretche pieces of coarsely woven cloth.
