The figure fro 1500 is meant to portray a pilgrim, having a hal and holdinga Latin cross, The next two specimen (1606163 5) are angels, one supportinga shield wit initials A. P.and an object resembling an ancho cross. The last two marlks 1686 are of German origin and are foun in the same sheet of paper The earliest watermark of th human head was a portrait o Jesus Christ, and was of Frenc origin from about the year 1399 This device represents the Ver Icon or True Image. The legen runs that the Saviour on the wa to Calvary was encountered b the woman Berenice. Filled wit compassion, she wiped His fac with her handkerchief whic miraculously retained an imprin of the Divine Features, whereupon Berenice was re-christene St. Veronica, an anagram of Ver Icon.
