Show OLD~PAPERMAKIN 3 rags circulated around the tub and were lacerate by the metal bars of the roll; the material havin been kept in constant motion by the impetus give by a backfall and the action of the roll. With th invention of the Hollander the putrification of rag ceased in many mills, and they were washed an beaten without preliminary treatment. This procedure was carried on in at least one English handmade paper mill to within twelve years ago Even after the introduction of the Dutch beate many mills in France and Germany retained th old stampers for breaking the rags, and employe the Hollanders for completing the beating, In 171 one of the largest paper mills in Germany operate twenty-five sets of stampers of four each, whic supplied three dipping vats with pulp. This sam mill, in 1777, had thirteen sets of stampsand thre Hollanders which macerated sufficient pulp fo workmen to make into paper from four vats. I 1829 this mill reduced the number of stampers t eight setsand increased the Hollanders to four. Thi equipment furnished the beaten pulp to the sam four vats. The Hollander gradually succeeded th old stampers until they went out of use entirely As early as 1760 one of the largest paper mills i France had discarded the stampers altogether bu operated twelve Hollanders which supplied th pulp for twenty vats.
