Cotton raw or woven, was never used as a material b the early Chinese or Arabp makers The Arabs probably dxsmtegrated the linen rag by placing them in heapsand allowing them to ferment, and then boiling the mass in wood-ashes The material was next crowded into bags whenc itwas suspended inarunning stream, the action o which removed a great part of the alkaline residu and much of the dirt. Their original method o beating the cleansed rags to a pulp was probabl like that of the Chinese, but later, in the development of papermaking by the Arabs, a trip-hamme was used which acted in the same manner as th hand-mallet, only with this implement the hammer or mallet was caused to fall on the pulp b workers treading on the end of the tilt-bar Doubtless these same methods were used for th maceration of pulp at the introduction of pape fabrication into Europe. However, it did not tak the Europeans long to devise a better method o beating, forabout A.D. 1151 there was invented a Xativa, an ancient city of Valencia, Spain, a stamp ing-mill operated by water power. At that perio both linen and cotton rags were used as material fo Diital image© 2004 Marriot Libary, University o Utah. Al righs reserved |
