Show MAGNA RAILROAD SLOPE SITE M0l POST REMOVAL AND POST RECLAMATION SAMPLING REPORT INTRODUCTIO N The Magna Railroad Slope Site is located immediately south of Bravo Gate and north of the Ore Haulage Railroad tracks. The Site consisted of a steep slope formed from the dumping of slag, tailings, iron and copper stained gravels, and debris. The Site was characterized in 1995 for metals contamination defining two areas that contained elevated concentrations of arsenic and( or) lead. In March 1996 through July 1996, 3500 cubic yards of contaminated soil were removed from the Site and hauled to the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Pond C for temporary storage until disposal in the Arthur Step-Back Repository. After removal, 17 samples were collected from the removal areas and analyzed for total arsenic, cadmium, selenium, and lead. The results of the analysis indicated that 7 of the samples exceeded the action levels for lead and( or) arsenic but further removal could not be performed due to close proximity to operational facilities. All post removal samples were analyzed for leachability using the Synthetic Precipitation Leachability Procedure (SPLP). None of the analytes were detected using SPLP above the RCRA Toxicity Characteristic (TC) limits for Toxicity Characteristic Leachability Procedure (TCLP). As part of the reclamation, 30,000 cubic yards of fill soil were hauled to the Site and the slope was benched to control erosion. After reclamation was completed, post reclamation and fill soil samples were collected from the Site and analyzed for total arsenic, cadmium, lead and selenium concentrations. None of the analytes were detected above the action levels and the Site is now considered closed. This report documents the post removal and post reclamation sampling activities. LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION The Magna Railroad Slope Site is located immediately south of Bravo Gate and north of the Ore Haulage Railroad tracks (Dwg. No. 507-T-0 173). The Site consisted of a steep slope formed from the dumping of slag, tailings, iron and copper stained gravels, and debris. The Site is 1450 feet long by 100 to 150 feet wide at the west end and 50 to 100 feet at the east end. Formerly an employee parking area was located between the base of the slope and Bravo Gate. A paved \Valbvay from the parking area traversed up the slope through the Site to the Magna Rail Car Shop building located at the top of the slope. The parking area was relocated to the east end of the sight closer to the top of the slope and the walk.way was eliminated entirely. Contaminated soil \Vas defined in t\VO separate areas within the Site, one irregularly shaped area located at the east end covering approximately 43,400 square feet and the other area located at MO 1prpt.wpd* June 10, 1997 Rev. 0 |
