Show 605 April 25, 1953 The Honorable Earl J. Glade and City Commissioners City and County Building Salt Lake City 1, Utah Gentlemen: As you are well aware from the press reports, the Board of Regents at its last regular meeting passed a resolution asking the City of Salt Lake to take steps to improve Second South Street between Thirteenth East and University Streets. There is probably no more unsightly street in our beautiful city, and many visitors to the campus comment about the poor appearance of this approach to the campus, Especially the Board of Regents would like to call your attention to the fact that a roofless, burned-out structure has been standing there for several years and certainly contributes nothing either to the attractiveness of the street or to its sanitation. Another item of concern to us is the fact that, whereas most of Salt Lake City's streets are lined with grassy plots between the curbs and the sidewalks, the block in question has only wide, barren, desert-like areas on either side, If these areas are not to be planted and landscaped, there would be an advantage in moving the curbs back close to the sidewalks, thus widening the road by nearly two rods° Since so many automobiles constantly pass through this congested area and since so many cars are always parked against the curbs, diagonally on one side, the movement of traffic would be greatly facilitated by this change, The Board realizes that there may be unknown factors which hamper the parking or beautifying of this short strip of road, They hope, however, that something can be done to make the approach to the campus more at- tractive, and asked me to call the matter to your attention and have a report for the next meeting to be held on May 11, Very sincerely yours, President ARO:CW cc: Mr. W.
