Show 535 Thomas, as a teacher, always stood for more than mere factual knowledge and bookish learning. He impressed his students as being a sage and a friend of man. He was a competent scholar who dared to think new thoughts and who encouraged his students to recognize the possibilities for growth and improvement in the ways of our culture without doing violence to the traditions of the past. Doctor Thomas' contributions as a scholar were marked by the same wisdom, foresight, daring social in- ventiveness, and human compassion as characterized his teaching. Among his published works are Early Chinese Political Thought, The Four Fears, This Nation Under god, and Thomas Jefferson: World Citizen. The University community is aware that in this loss we and the family are joined in grief by an entire nation, and, indeed, by people throughout the free world. With heartfelt appreciation for an opportunity to have been associated with Doctor Thomas and with sorrow at his passing, we, the University community, express our sympathies to the members of the family. The President stated that he had received a letter from Northwestern University announcing that NORTHWESTERN it is conferring, at its coming commencement, an UNIVERSITY CONFERRING honorary degree on Dr. Henry Eyring, Dean of the DEGREE ON DR.
