Show 536 February 19, 1953 Dr, A. Ray Olpin President University of Utah Dear President Olpin: In order to facilitate the administrative reorganization of the University which was started by the appointment of two vice presidents, I sincerely believe that you and the Board of Regents should be given full opportunity to make further plans as freely as possible. It is within your province to assign to me as Dean of Faculty, under Board of Regents Regulations, Chapter 7, Section 3, such duties as you may desire, What you may assign I shall willingly do until the termination of my contract as Dean of Faculty June 30, 1953, I have orally requested and you have assured me that my position as professor of languages on this campus, 'which carries tenure, will continue after July 1, 1953. It is, therefore, requested that you present and recommend, if you wish to the Board of Regents or appropriate committee thereof, the following: (1) That I be given assurance of my academic position as professor of languages after July 1, 1953, Since I have been asked to teach in the department of history, I should like to request that with the appropriate departmental and administrative approvals I be given the ad- ditional title of professor of history to indicate my official connection with that department. This will also permit an equitable assignment of salary between the two departments. (2) That my salary in that position be determined now, if possible, by the Board of Regents upon recommendation of the appropriate administrative officers on aj'ustand equitable basis, It will be necessary for me to apply. immediately to research foundations and other agencies in order that I carry on my work in Greek paleography with special emphasis on medieval manuscripts of the New Testament, It may be necessary for me during my non-teaching quarters to go abroad from time to time to visit monastic and private libraries in order to secure the material I need. This, of course, is expensive and I cannot entirely finance it from my personal budget. |
