The following resolution was presented by President Olpin: RESOLUTION WHEREAS, the University of Utah, an institution of the State of Utah, is maintained from monies raised through taxation of real and personal property and/ or student registration fees, making it a part of the State governmentaan‘d WHEREAS, in the normal activities of student training the University of Utah publishes a daily newspaper, The Chronicle; and WHEREAS, several years ago the University established a modest printing ,plant on the campus, ostensibly for the purpose of better training students of journalism, but which has been allowed and encouraged to expand until now it can be considered one of the finest printing installations in the State, in its field; and WHEREAS, on several occasions in the past the University has been deterred from its expressed desire to expand their printing operations by purchasing additional equipment to handle the entire publishing of The Chronicle by the University, thus removing this work from a bona fide printing firm; and WHEREAS, as recently as two weeks ago the University Board of Regents gave consideration to the possible expansion of the printing operations, and reportedly decided against the purchase of additional equipment, and further decided to ask for bids for the printing of The Chronicle; and WHEREAS, after bids were received, a contract was awarded to a firm whose motives are doubted as being in the best interests of the University of Utah, or of its students, or of Unions affiliated with the printing industry of the State, or of the taxpayers of the State of Utah; and WHEREAS, information has come to the attention of this body which in our opinion merits the attention and concern of the President of the University, and of its Board of Regents; therefore be it RESOLVED, that the President of the University of Utah is hereby requested to arrange an early meeting between the Board of Regents and representatives of the Salt Lake Allied Printing Trades Council and officers of the Salt Lake City Federation of Labor; and be it still |
