FARNSWORTH: Q How far down the river did you go with your partner and Philpot and your boats? A We went down as far as Mexican Hat, or first stop; Mr. Raplee had a party in there from Colorado Springs, -- I believe they were Yates and McQueen, -- and they were testing some bars, placer bars. Young Hyde was to stop and help them open up the bars down to pay dirt. We remained with them for a period of about a week or ten days. When this work was completed, we continued our trip on down the river, and we arrived down around in what we call the Mendenhall gooseneck, and remained there for a short time prospecting on the bar and working it; decided the easiest way to work the canyon was to go down and stop on a bar and work it out, then move to the next; when we got down to Monaker's trail I had sprained my ankle, and couldn't get around on the rough gravel, and had to quit the river. But I left my boat and supplies with my partners, and they continued on down some |
