Show Dellenbaugh- D A As far as I know, the Deseret News was the organ of the Mormon Church at that time, and whenever any of the par-ties -- exploring parties and settlement parties went off to create an new stake, or whatever they called it, they always wrote back letters -- generally wrote back letters to the Deseret News, and when they made up their records they searched the pages of the Deseret News, and that is why a great many of these records have been transferred, when they have been verified by the Church Historian, to the Church records. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q You mean, by being verified, that the historian has ascertained they are an accurate copy of the newspaper, is that it? A Verified as to the historical accuracy. The method, as I understand it, of the Historian• fs office, is to seek out those pioneers who had taken part in those explorations, and questioning them from time to time when they could find them, to see whether the records are correct or not, and when they find they are incorrect, they correct them, and when anything goes through as approved, it means, so far as they have been able to find out, it is a correct record. |
