Show INTERVIEW: Lopez Page 24 the city dumps, and we picked up old bottle or whatever I could find that I could sell, iron junks, and whatever I can sell, maybe make two, three, four, five dollars, that was big help for the winter time, that is how I used to pass the winter time in Colorado. BM By getting stuff in the truck? EL Yes. Then I was selling iron for $4.00 a ton. BM How did you get so much iron? EL Well, pick up whatever you can find in the city dumps and get it out and pick it wherever you lived and get it out until you think, you feel you had a little .. . BM A ton ... isn't a ton a lot? EL Well, is quite a bit, yes. BM And who would buy this? EL Well, the junk yard. BM The junk yard? EL Yes. Even when I was in Mexico, you know, we asked a bunch of kids, who used to go to the railroad tracks and pick up the spikes from the railroad, all the spikes and ... you know, and we used to sell them a penny the spike, and this time if you got a penny, two pennies, you go and buy yourself an all day sucker or something like that, that was good enough for a kid ... BM Have you ever gone to visit Mexico? |
