Show INTERVIEW: Nieves Page 6 would be in the service. We wore uniforms just like the soldiers did. We had reveille, retreat, just like the service did. It was ... the camps were Army camps, you know. An ex-Army officer used to be a commander. Second in command was another lieutenant. So, actually it was kind of hooked up with the Army. Army convoys used to drop the food to us. So it was Army, only they called us the Civilian Conservation Crop. But we had discipline almost like the Army, not as strict, because if you wanted to go over the hill, they didn't chase you like they do in the Army. But other than that, it was about the same. Got to line up first thing in the morning and then in the night, too. Salute the flag and things like this. But, the Civilian Conservation Corp did a lot of good for a lot of youngsters in these days. You know, and I think this ·Youth Corp is a little different. The only thing I got against this is the many that are in one camp. I don't think they can ... crowded like that, now they can't do the job they would if they had them separated, like having 1,200 men at Clearfield. If they have them separated, you know, 200 men camps in 12 different camps, you could work better with people when they are. fewer. It's just like, I belong to many boards, but I don't like to handle a big board of 16-20 people. I'd rather have one that has 10 or 8. They're easier to handle, |
