Show INTERVIIDv: Nieves Page 31 like I say, this VISTA volunteer helped a lot. He knew a lot, because, I guess, that is part of his job, to organize the community, and he was a lot of help. A lot of good guidance. GC: Was there any particular ... or just a general social get together then? ~~: Yes, at that time, we never did name the group. We really didn't have time to name it, the group, because we were trying to find the legal ways to get it chartered or whatever. We call it charter because like the Lions Club or the Eagles, they have to have a charter. And I thought maybe that's what we had to have. Actually we didn't have to have a charter. We had to have articles of incorporation or a thing like this. But when you don't know what you're doing, I mean, you have to feel your way. GC: Was there any particular reason that some of this people didn't get employed, or was the general social situation ... ? RN: Well, it was discrimination, employment. There is no doubt about that. Even this Raso was a Union man, and he was always, when the left over was coming, for instance , a construction job got started and they get called about half way through the construction, when it was about half way done they call, you seP7 SomPbody already had all the grading. Ev~n the Union was kind of discriminatory at that time, we thought. |
