Show INTERVIEW: Lopez Page 19 BM Really? EL Yes. BM When was this? EL That was in 1949. BM '49 and where was the house? EL It was in 6th West and 5th South I think it was, Salt Lake City . BM And the State Highway Department bought your house; did they offer you good money for the house? EL Well, not what I asked him for, I asked him $15,000 for it, and they, I got $7,700 for it. They told me if I didn't take that, anyway they were going to take it, and then besides after the law suits and all that, I wasn't going to come out with the whole money, they were going to take the money because then I was going to have to spend some of my own money for court and suits and all that, and by the time all that was supposed to be finished then I was gGing to come up with the $7,700. BM So ... you just had to take it. EL I had to take the money. BM Were there other people that were in the same position as you? EL A lot of them, a lot of people, yes. BM Were there a lot of Mexicans involved or ... EL Well, I don't know exactly, then I sold that, I had to sell it, so ... then I guess they give, I think it was a month to look |
