Show Interview: Isidro & Inez Marrufo Page 41 would say "Are you Mexican?" and I would say "Yes, I am a Mexican," and there were some people at the back and they say "Well, if you are Mexican, have the place for somebody else" they happened to a friend of mine so they say what nationalities and you are Spanish-American and they say you are nothing but a Mexican. Leave the place for the white people there is more shame that people refuse you like that you know, as long as you are Spanish, American, you are nothing but a Mexican but they don't accept the name, 'Mexican,' what I think is really bad, you know, that is why this division of Chicano and Mexican. How do you like la palabra Chicano? Do you like it? BM: I like it. I think is a New Movement. I was going to ask you, how do you like it? MM: I don't care much for it. No, I don't care for the word, I care for the people. But I don't care for the change, because there is a change. SM: What? MM: Shortened the word. BM: The word chicano, what do you think of the word chicano. SM: I never hear it before, so. MM: They never hear before. SM: We never hear that word before, in our life, so now, lately they come around with that Chicano business. I don't know. MM: We are not against the word, the community, La Raza, but to me they don't sound so good. BM: No? |
