Show INTERVIEW: Nieves Page 9 and that, you know, discipline is a big thing in the service. That is one of the things that youngsters don't know at home and ... like parents can give you discipline but not the kind that you get in regimentation, of course those kids already knew what to do. A lot of them already had trades of their own that was useful in the service. Some of them were cooks and bakers; they were already used to baking for two or three hundred men. So, I imagine that had a lot of bearing on their rank when they went in. GC: You went into the Navy? RN: Yes. GC: What was your rank when you went in? RN: When I was in the ... I joined the Navy, I didn't get drafted, in 1943, March. And I went in as a plain ordinary seaman, and when I got out of boot camp, I was a seaman first class. And then of course, pretty soon, I would take classes for officers in Treasure Island, and got first class petty officer, when I got out in 1945. BN: Why did you join the service? RN: Well, it was more or less like, well ... before, to back up, before I went in the Navy, I was in the Merchant Marine. I went back to New York and I went in thP Merchant MarinP, but it didn't work out because you made a lot of money, but we lost |
