Show INTERVIEW: Lopez Page 11 EL Pomona, California, that's where my sister lives, well, everybody, the children that are married now, they live in different places, but all in California. BM Were there very many Spanish-speaking people in Keenesburg? EL Oh yes, quite a few that I know about ... BM Did they come in from Mexico, or were they from Colorado and New Mexico? EL Well, they were from all over, I used to know some from Colorado, some from New Mexico, some from Texas, you know ... all over. BM They all speak Spanish the same? EL Not exactly, not exactly because, I guess you know, about yourself that people, Mexicans, from New Mexico they speak a little different than people from Old Mexico, so Old Mexico·, from one state to another state they speak different too, you know what I mean, just like some states in Mexico they just speak like in New Mexico the same thing. BM Did they get along good? EL Oh yes, the only thing is that some people from New Mexico or Colorado, their folks have lived here for a long time, like it has happened to me twice, that they thought that I was a "Mojado," here in the United States, so they told the ... specialization, or the police or whatever it was, you know, to find out if I was here with ... living without my papers, it happened to me twice. |
