Show INTERVIEW: Nieves Page 5 He has a scholarship through Tracy Collins. He is going to this University now. And his brother, Nick Torres, was there. I remember quite a few. BM: What year was it that you came to Utah? RN: I came in 1938, in October. GC: Those 200 ... all of you came together to this particular camp? RN: Yes. GC: You didn't meet anybody en route ... nobody went? RN: No, they just dropped us off the train here in Thompson, Utah, and then they took us in trucks to this camp. GC: So it was right outside Thompson? RN: No, it was Blanding, which is about 90 miles from Thompson, south of Thompson. In the middle of nowhere, there was just farms in there. Eventually, it got to some of them kids that had been in the city all of their life and they didn't stay very long. After two years that I stayed, I was made a specialist. That's all you could stay, two years. After that, you had to become a specialist at something and ... I became a specialist and I could stay as long as I wanted to. So, I stay until March, 1941. GC: When you say, specialist, you specialist on what? RN: Sp~cialist on som~thing, you know. Lik~ I was a l~ad~r, you know. I was made a leader, actually just like a sergeant |
