Show INTERVIEW: Lopez Page 15 hold that job up to now. B I Do you remember your wages when you were working for the Burlington Line? EL It was 32~ cents an hour then, for the railroad, for the Burlington line, and then when I got me the job with the Union Pacific then it was 35 cents an hour. BM And how about when you became a section foreman, did you make more money then? EL Oh yes, then I was getting $173 a month, then I was getting money payment you know, wages, $173 a month as a foreman, and from there on, you know from time to time the ... the wages coming up, coming up, little by little, little by little ... up to now is like now, I am getting $37 a day, up to now. BM Was ... how was the job of section foreman different from your other labor work? What did the section foreman do? E Well, the section foreman he is in charge of mayb~ two, three, four, five men, depends on how many men they allow you to have, and ... the ... roadmaster tells you what to do and where to do it, what kind of job you have to do, and whatever it is supposed to be done for the railroad on the railroad, but the foreman, he is in charge of his men, he has the responsibility of his men do his work. BM Were there any other Mexican foremans tl-at you work with? |
