An Englishman in New York City is that which describes the excitement caused by the discovery of gold in California. ] I have a subject of more moment, to inform you of. Mr MC is going to California, gold digging.36 I think he is right. The gold is to be had, for going, and such an opportunity is never likely to occur again during his life time. I think it likely that I shall go myself. I am expecting to have the offer of the opportunity-and mean to take it, if it come. I would carry my religion and my God with me, and then I should be safe, come what may. Mr MC. is going out with a capital company of men, and my Second Son, is aiming to go with him. What an opening into the hill Lucre, is this California discovery! The thing becomes more Extraordinary & wonderful every day. Some great seal of Providence, is opened. The Catastrophe of the Drama of Revelation, is at hand. I am more fired by the Enterprise, than with the love of the Gold. I hope to have much to say to you, on so interesting a topic. Thousands of the best men in Society are going-Indeed, it is only the better class who can go. It requires more money to get there, than the common people can find. So, excepting what scum is there al- ready, such as a few stragglers from the troops sent out, or desert- ers from the Ships, none can get there. The population will be of the choicest kind. Men of education, character, position, and reli- gion, are going There, and very soon, cities of elegance and re- finement, will rise up- churches, schools, colleges, and institutions will follow. The Gospel of the Kingdom will go there, Missionary Enterprise will be Excited intensely, and China, and the East-the Isles of the Pacific, and the Southern Continent of America, will be moved to their wishes, by this wonderful development. If I go, I shall solemnly and formally, dedicate myself and all that may be mine, to the Service of my Saviour. I ought to have been his Mis- sionary, when young, and blooming with life. Let Him have the remnant of my days. The amounts of the gold, are increasingly wonderful. Sometimes, men have become worth ten thousand pounds, in as many weeks. One man out there, has sent his father 36 This was Dr. John McNulty, a physician at 154 Greenwich, New York City, who became the leader of the expedition to California which John Hudson joined.
