Description John Hudson, artist and writer, chronicles his travels from New York City across the Plains towards California to partake in the Gold Rush. What was to have been a temporary stop in Salt Lake City stretches to sixteen months and includes participation in Captain Howard Stansbury's expedition of the Great Salt Lake.

Chaplain J Hudson Key member N Peelor You perceive from the bye laws that there is no one Individual that monopolizes a lions share of the profits. We are strictly repub- lican & the Captain of our Comp has no more of the dust than the humblest individual in the Association. I have declared my intention of becoming an American Citizen & have gone through the necessary forms repudiating my native Country & placing my- self under the protection of the U. S Government. This is rendered necessary as there is a proclamation forbidding all Foreigners to dig in California & denying them a share of the plunder4 We shall leave New York upon the 15 Inst gt it is my intention to keep a journal make it as interesting as possible & transmit it to you; it has been suggested that such adventures written by a Known indi- vidual & a real live Californian Gold digger would be well paid for by the Bir paper, Journal,' I hope you will improve upon the hint
