Description John Hudson, artist and writer, chronicles his travels from New York City across the Plains towards California to partake in the Gold Rush. What was to have been a temporary stop in Salt Lake City stretches to sixteen months and includes participation in Captain Howard Stansbury's expedition of the Great Salt Lake.

S. I hope that you are all well & happy I scarce need say I think very often of you & pray that all of us may be preserved to meet undivided again in this world. Do not be apprehensive on my ac- count I am perfectly well in good spirits & exult in the enterprize. B Hudson Esqr 18 Bull st Birmingham New York May 1.1849. Mr B. Hudson My dear Sir I have the pleasure to own receipt of your Communication of the 5th Ult. & also the pleasure to Enclose one I have received within the hour from your Son John-The latter was Covered by a letter to myself from him in which he gave me permission to read it,-which I have done with great relish. It is calculated I should suppose to allay in a good measure the anxiety & fears I was primed to hear you express in regard to him & I sincerely hope you may see no further occasion for great uneasiness on his account. The Steamer "Sarahsands" upon which vessel Messr Blyth & Graham shipped this package of goods intended for your Son ar- rived this day in port- In following the instructions you report 26 Dewitt & Harrison were reported as being worth $125,000 in 1851 and out of 508 San Francisco and Sacramento firms listed, only 24 were credited with greater wealth. In 1848 the Dewitt & Harrison store was located on the northwest corner of Sansome and Pacific streets. The company later became Dewitt, Kittle and Company, then Kittle and Company, and finally went out of business shortly before 1912.
