What was to have been a temporary stop in Salt Lake City stretches to sixteen months and includes participation in Captain Howard Stansbury's expedition of the Great Salt Lake.

Description To the Plains in `49 every precaution to secure to Uncle a profitable return for the in- vestment & to you in case of my decease the remainder of the money due to me as a Member of the Association. I think I have before mentioned that the Company acts as a Life Insurance, so that should I die before the Society disband the whole of my share is paid to my heirs I shall write from St Louis & give you an account of our pro- gress. You should receive in Bull St 2 letters & Package containing Dagguery which bye the way is a very beautiful specimen of the art; of course I mean looking at it as a picture. All letters send to Mr Robbins who will forward them to the Agent of the Colony Guard at San Francisco. Wishing you every blessing I remain My dear Father Most Affectionately Yours John Hudson We leave on Thursday next Ma 15 with light hearts & in my case light pockets. I have about 30 Dollars but as you are aware the Comp[any] furnish all that is necessary Mr. B. Hudson My dear Father Kansas Missouri April 7th 1849 I little expected nine months ago that I should address a letter to you upwards of 5000 miles from home & far from the very limits of civilization, but such is my lot. however the happy cir- cumstances in which this journey is made, the absence of pecu- niary care & above all the society of our fellows, who band to- 8 The $400.00 paid by each member of the Colony Guard for his passage across the continent should have provided a comfortable journey. Mormon leader Jesse Haven described the cost for a traveler to get from Boston to Council Bluffs, Iowa. "I now can truly say, if any saint at the east can raise $25.00 and has no more than 100 lbs. of freight, that, under ordinary circumstances, he can come from the City of Boston to Pottawattomi County, Iowa, with that amount of money, and have enough left after he gets here, to pay for a supper, night's lodging and breakfast, also to hire a horse for one day at least to ride round and see the country."
