Show lit Coinpl . . Exhibit 221 ) The route could not be traveled by wagons . . All freight was transported by pack anfinals . . Subsequent to ( Escalante's Escalantes ) explorations , , ( Wolfs- Wolfs IN'rolfs- INrolfs ) kill , Jedadiah Sinith , and others used the overland , route from Santa Fe , New Mexico , , to ( Monterey Monterey' Monterey ) and the other Spanish towns in California . . For fifty years a substantial trade was carried on by this route . History does not disclose that any person ever attempted to operate boats upon any of the three rivers for the purpose of traveling or transporting goods between Santa Fe , New Mexico , and California . . The Old Spanish Trail appears upon all of the old maps . ( See Compl . Exhibit 54 ; Dellenbaugh , , Abs . R . Vol . 1 , p . 446 ; Compl . Exhibit 14 , page 95 ) Hispanic American Historical Review , Vol . Bry No . . 3 , August , 1921 . The Master has indicated ( See Exception 7 ) that the rivers were in his opinion not usable in ( connec- connec ) tion with the trade on the Spanish Trail . The point where the Spanish Trail crossed the Virgin River was only a few miles from the Colorado River . River transportation from any of the ( crossings crossin"s crossins ) of the Trail on the upper rivers would have eliminated miles of ( hard bard ) overland travel . It was the custom of the pioneers to travel the easiest way , and when the rivers were not used , that fact is evidence of lack of navigability . |
