Show 31 The boat was equipped with a block and ( tackle- tackle ) for the purpose of assisting it off sand bars by ( inak- inak ) ing a line fast to the shore . ( Abs . R . vol . 1 , p . 568 . ) The boat encountered numerous sand bars on the . down trip and finally reached a point . about a ( quar- quar ) ter of a mile above the first rapid in Cataract ( Can- Can ) yon . At this point the boat turned around and returned to ( Wheeler's Wheelers ) Ranch . The trip upstream was not quite as difficult as the one downstream , because in many cases the boat could be backed off the sand bars . ( Abs . R . vol . 1 , p . 568 . ) The boat was tied up at ( Wheeler's Wheelers ) Ranch , and no attempt was made to take it into the town of Greenriver , because , as described by Edwards , he ( "did did ) not think it possible to get it the boat ) up there ; too much rock and rough water . " ( Abs . R . vol . 1 , p . 569 . ) A second trip was made down the river about ten days later and practically the same difficulties were encountered as upon the first trip . Edwards . testified ( Abs . vol . 1 , p . 569 ) that while the river was higher on the second trip , it ( had bad ) shifted the bars so that neither the markings nor the information ( gath- gath ) ered upon the first trip was of much assistance to him in operating the boat . On the second trip , the boat again returned to ( Wheeler's Wheelers ) Ranch ( Abs . R . vol . 1 , p . 570 ) and was . tied and abandoned there . The engines and boilers on the boat were taken off and used in connection with a plant at Greenriver , Utah . . The hull of ( the thc- thc ) boat was abandoned . ( Abs . R . vol . 1 , , p . . 570 ) |
