On Colorado River below Cataract Canyon when going upstream rowed and towed , poled on trip in September , 1892 ( R . 3270 ) ; when water is still can row , at rapids this can not be done , have to pull boat up , can not pole over them if you have big boat ; generally waded over rapids and took boat up ( R . 3274-3275 ) ; sometimes had no difficulty as on trip in ( May 'May May ) when water rising ; this was in 1895 ( R . 3277-3278 ) ; on other trips had trouble according to time of the year ; after floods go down have some ( channel ebannel ) which lasts until some flood comes down some side canyon , which starts silt moving , and you can not go back the same way you came down when channel changes ; might do so overnight ( R . 3278 ) ; ; between Bull Flog and Hanson rapids got on rocks with raft ; had two 24 ft . boats ; this ( Avas was ) in 1895 ; one boat loaded with iron broke , the other one sunk ; river was too swift to get small boat up ( R . 3280- 3284 ) ; at Lake Canyon found water latter part of August was from nothing to over his head ; ; had hard time getting raft off rocks at Lake Canyon , , had to pry it with bars ( R . 3285 ) . 1888 to 1896 , Hite . - ( M .
