Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

( R . 1913- 1914 ) Kane testified from Greenriver to mouth of Green River bothered good deal shallow water making ( de- de ) lays and hard work ; encountered good many ( chan- chan ) nels , scattered out ; stuck on bars ; mouth of Green to cataracts swift water ( R . 2001-2005 ) ; Glen Canyon sand bars not so bad as in previous ( De- De ) cember ; had more water ; end of Cataract to Lees Ferry pretty good ( water water- water ) ; one rapid Dark Canyon ; two rough ones in Narrow Canyon ; rapids in Glen Canyon due to shallow water ; Tickaboo rapid swift and shallow ; Trachyte rapid worst ; boats dragged several times ; in swift water have to row to beat current to steer boats at all ; shoved and hauled boats in Glen Canyon below Tickaboo Bar ; made one portage half mile long sooner than pull and haul and lift boats ; walked across river at that point ; there are reefs or ledges in the river , with breaks in them from few to 10 or 15 ft .
