Show 22 Salt Lake City Daily ( Telegraph Telegrapli ) March 14 , 1865 . . ( ( Soe See ) Compl . Exhibit ( 023 6223 ) , pp . 3 , 4 , and 5 . ) A discussion of the ( navigability 11aNrigability ) of the Colorado River was made the subject of an editorial comment in the Deseret News , March 29 , 1865 . ( See ( pages- pages ) 5 and 6 , ( Compl Coinpl ) . Exhibit 623 . ) The question was ( further furt'ner furtner ) discussed in the ( Milen- Milen ) nial Star , published at Salt Lake City , ( March Alarch ) 30 , 1865 . ( See Compl . Exhibit 623 , page 6 . ) The necessity of opening the Colorado River for navigation is summed ( up tip ) in the document heretofore referred to , appearing in the Daily Telegraph in these words : The farmers of this territory will always find a splendid market for all they can raise , and the goods necessary for them can be purchased far cheaper than at the most favorable seasons when goods could be brought over the plains by the long and expensive route heretofore taken from the Missouri River . The quotation from the above newspaper shows that the people of Utah , and especially the merchants of Salt Lake City , knew the Colorado River and knew the advantages of a water route into Utah . If the Colorado River above Callville or the Green River ( had bad ) possessed any possibilities as a navigable stream , the people of Utah certainly would have ( dis- dis ) covered them . The water route , if the rivers were navigable , would have been continued up the ( Colo- Colo ) rado River to the nearest point of contact with Salt Lake City , which would have been less than 150 miles away . |
