Vol . 1 , pp . 587-592 : ) McDonald could not find channel in same place as on first Stanton expedition ; channel disappeared somewhere else ; had same trouble on bars frequently between Greenriver and the cataracts ; the channel in the Colorado River not as bad or changable as on the Green ; sand is moving all the time ; tried backing off bars with oars , but oars went down in sand so far had hard time to get them out ; more water in river when first trip made ; than when second Stanton trip was made ; the ledge in Glen Canyon extends from one side of river to the other , water averages there six or eight inches deep ; ledge extends down river 75 to 100 yards encountered Bull Frog and Trachyte Rapids in same canyon .
