Show Conspirators discuss what to do for fear their plot has been discovered. (CLASSIC) ^JULIUS** Brutus (played by Roy Gibson) comforts his wife, who has sensed the plot against Caesar. CAESAR By William Shakespeare MARCH 30-APRIL 8 April 8-2 p.m. Matinee Directed by ROBERT HYDE WILSON Scenery and Lighting by VERN ADIX Costumes by FRANKIE BLIESNER Shakespeare's remarkable and moving tragedy vividly recreates the events leading to the assassination of Julius Caesar. One of Shakespeare's most important plays, Julius Caesar is also one of his most engrossing: a classical "must" for every theatre-goer. The final production of this year's main stage season was "Julius Caesar." Its director, Robert Hyde Wilson, sought to ignore the conventional "toga and laural leaf" style in doing the play. Instead, he had modern, military dress for the actors and a stylized set of black and gray with many levels and stairs. The director wanted in the play to emphasize the ideas that have meaning for man today through the use of Shakespeare's original language. He wanted to point out also "the responsibilities of the individual in a democratic state, the conduct of politics, the use of power, and the futility of war." Through the use of his unusual set, special effects, and his "cutting" of the play, Mr. Wilson sought to "keep the audience vitally interested in the people and plot of this production." 120 |
