Following the newly-established tradition begun last year, the University theater commissioned Robert Hyde Wilson to write a new play especially for PMT patrons. As a result, "Wake Up, Old Man" enjoyed its world premier on the evening of January 19, 1967. Starring celebrated actress Leora Dana and veterans Richard Ked-dington and Bena Le Gibson, the play concerned two sisters and a brother, all growing old and set in their ways. Intricate in plot, the play was a comedy of manners among the three leads. As Edna, the eldest of the group, Miss Dana stubbornly refused to sell their old Victorian house in the face of urban development. She lived with the memory of their father, dead now, but once an influential and powerful member of the community. Feeling the temper of the times, Viola and 'baby brother' William tried to force their hand and in the end wound up involved in curious intrigues and situations. Edna herself was found toying with stocks and bonds, a venture which previously had brought disaster upon the household. Directing his own play, Mr. Wilson showed that one cannot evade time indefinitely. 118 |
