Show A flock of veteran seniors combined with some promising freshmen stars to give Utah one of the best baseball seasons in conference history. Headed by Coach Pres Summerhays and Assistant Monte Howard, the Redskin nine dumped several outstanding teams and came up with a spectacular winning season. The Utes opened with third place honors in the San Diego Marine tournament early in the season. Utah conquered two highly rated opponents, San Jose State and the San Diego Marines, and gave nationally top ranked Southern California a run for their money before falling 6-5. The Redskins came off one of their most successful California tours and added several other intersectional victories before opening conference play. Seniors Steve Ra-dulovich, Mike Beyeler, Jack Gerke and Jerry Pullman comprised one of the hottest infields in the WAC. Outfield stars Jim Whitely, George Theodore, Dave Duncan and Dave Edmunds provided tremendous backup play throughout the season. One of the surprises of the year came in an outstanding bunch of sophomores, led by John Landures, Dick Hardy, Lynn Parsons and Dan Prock. Pitchers George Allen, John Nordquist and Allen Axtell helped. Utah's mound staff was the backbone of the team. Jim Whitley laces one to the outfield. |
