Show Jackson is all-WAC; Menyard takes rebounding honors Of the Utes' 15 victories, three were especially memorable. In Palo Alto Utah beat a fine Stanford team by a score of 100-87 in pre-season play; a 10th ranked Boston College team fell under the Ute attack in the opener of the Christmas Holiday Sugar Bowl Tourney in New Orleans, 90-88; and one time third-ranked New Mexico was stung by a last second running hook shot by Walt Simon here in Salt Lake to lose 66-64. Utah finished third in the WAC with a split 5-5 record, tying New Mexico, as BYU and Wyoming tied for first place honors. Prospects for next year couldn't be better with Jackson, Simon, Ockel, McKay, Menyard and company all returning. With this year in mind, Coach Gardner remarks: "Our 15-11 season record may not be as good as some we have had in recent years, but from my viewpoint it was gratifying in many ways. We started the season with only two regulars and a total of four letter men, so not too much was really expected. I was pleased with our progress and especially happy with the two decisive wins over Arizona and Arizona State to end the season on a happy note. I certainly can't complain with our third place tie in a tough conference race like the WAC. The end of the race found us in second place in offense and defense."
