Show MAR: M aximum Advanced Registration Arrives Computer registration came to the University of Utah winter quarter, 1967 Its inauguration followed a busy period of editorials and apprehension that the modern student would be forced to give up his freedom of choice to the limited capacity of an impartial piece of hardware. It is of particular interest that an ad hoc committee on course evaluation published its first report to the student body simultaneously with the birth of winter quarter registration. Hence, it appeared as though students were informed as to the competency of the University's teaching staff and at the same time deprived of their ability to use this information in making their schedules. Nevertheless, after two quarters under the new system it has been found that most of these fears were groundless, and it looks as though our mechanical registrar is here to stay. Clarence A. Reeder, who was in charge of the changeover to the new system, was assisted by John Warnock, designer of the program for the IBM 7044. Mr. Warnock began his work as part of a Ph.D. thesis in September of 1965 and was joined by Craig Rasmussen a year later. A student gets an anonymous hand in filling out registration.
