By Mr. Blackmar: Q Will you tell us about this exhibit which is to be marked No. 39? A This photograph illustrates Rapids No. 23. It was at this point that the flood struck us; I have forgotten the exact date, but the right of July 5, I believe. Q Just tell me about that flood. A In going through the river I knew that we would be in danger of sudden floods, and accordingly I made it a point to sleep at the very edge of the water, so that if the water came up during the night it would awaken me and I could arouse the camp and get things in order. And we went to bed early that camp and get things in order. And we went to bed early that night. We had had a hard day. And I was awakened at, probably, eleven or twelve o'clock, with the feeling that was some one was tugging at my legs. i sprang up, grabbed my flashlight; and then I realized that the water was sweeping over my feet and legs. I went to where I had my boats tied and the equipment laid out; and I saw the boats were hammering on the rocks; and with the weight of the bot and the velocity of the water, if a boat is permitted to grind back and forth on the rocks for just a few hours, it will grind a hole through the bottom of the boat.
