A This ( indicating) is the Green River and this ( indicating) is the Colorado. Other explorers on the river speak of the danger of falling rocks. This is almost the only place on the river where there was any great danger from falling rocks. But we had heavy rains, and as we stood there-- we spent a day and a half there, and these rocks, loosened by the heavy rains, came crashing down, probably a dozen or fifteen of them, during the day and a half that we were there. By Mr. Blackmar: Q Between Greenriver and the confluence of these two rivers, did you meet any other boats or see any other people? A No, no other boats and no other people. Q And did you have any trouble in that stretch of the river with sandbars? A Yes: we ran on sandbars on that stretch of the river. Q Was it in that stretch of the river that you got the big flood? A It was in Cataract Canyon where the big floods were. As long as you are bringing out difficulties, it might be interesting to say that, at one point-- and this was typical-- I saw a place where I wanted to run ashore, and I gave the signal, 2011 |
