Show 12 And yet until 1869, there never was a completed exploration of this river. A few years after that, a man by the name of Francisco De Ulloa went up there, and went up north of the Gila River, probably some hundred miles north of the Gila River. While he was in there, a patron of his, by the name of Cardenas preceded him over land and came as far west as the Grand Canyon. So that as early as 1538, the existence of the Colorado River was known to the early Spanish explorers. There were other Spanish explorations, which continued from that time on down until the early part of the nineteenth century. As your Honor knows, the Spanish civilization and strength in the part of the United Stated north of Mexico was concentrated at Santa Fe, New Mexico; and while the Spanish were organized at Santa Fe, New Mexico, they also proceeded over here on the west coast ( indicating), and had established San Diego, and several other cities upon the Pacific Coast. And of course it became a vital matter to them that communication be established between Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the Pacific Coast; and they did establish such communication, but in this way: They came up here ( indicating) from Santa Fe, New Mexico, and crossed the San Juan River, and then proceeded on up here ( indicating on map), in the neighborhood of the 1973 |
