Show 18 Now, from time to time the towns of Greenriver, Utah, and Moab, have had dreams of navigation on this river. I do not believe that there is a river in the United States that, at some time, has not been thought to be suitable for navigation. In the year 1891 there was a steamboat constructed by the name of " Major Powell. The " Major Powell" was to operate between Greenriver, Utah, and Moab, Utah. The " Major Powell" made several trips, stuck on sandbars, and finally it was gotten back to Greenriver, Utah, and was dismantled and the engines put into an irrigating plant. In no sense of the word were the operations of the " Major Powell" successful; on the contrary, they were disastrous. They hauled no fright, they hauled no passengers. A short time after that, there was another boat, called the " Undine" which was put in operation. The " Undine" traveled down the Green River and made as far up as Moab and then it went a few miles north of Moab and was wrecked up there on first journey. So that the history of the " Undine" is against any theory of navigation. In 1905, there was another boat, called the " City of Moab" which was launched. They tried to operate this boat and they could not operate it. They brought it back to Green River, and christened it the " Cliff Dweller." And after they named it the " Cliff Dweller" they tried to operate it; but that was 1979 |
