Show 15 made in canoes, constructed out of wood, upon which had been stretched buffalo skins; and his operations were as far south as a place known as Ashley Falls, which is several miles north of Greenriver, Utah. In 1847, the Mormons came to Utah. And the Mormons were great pioneers, and they were great settlers, and they wanted to develop the country. And within a few years after they settled at Salt Lake City, they established this town here of Callso, Utah, which is right down here ( indicating), upon the map, west of the Colorado River. Also a town called Bellemont, Arizona, which was near the mouth of the Virgin River, and also some other cities in here ( indicating). A short time after that, I think it was along about 1855, they undertook to colonize in and around here ( indicating), in and about Moab, Utah. And yet there is not a record of the Mormon pioneers ever attempting any navigation upon any of these rivers. The trail overland was continued overland from Salt Lake City down here to Kanab ( indicating)-- the trails that went here ( indicating) to Moab, and also this old Spanish trail ( indicating). In the latter part of the 50' s, the Government of the United States became interested in the Colorado River, and they sent out a man of the name of Lieut. Ives, a lieutenant in the United States Engineers. He came up here ( indicating on map) to the Colorado River. And there was also a man of 1976 |
