Show 13 Dolores River, which is right in here ( indicating), and crossed the Dolores River. Then they swung over here ( indicating) and crossed the Green River, in the neighborhood of Greenriver, Utah, which is also known as Gunnison Cross. Then the trail swung to the southwest and came on through here ( indicating), in the neighborhood of Cedar City, and crossed the Virgin River, which connects with the Colorado River at Black Now, the Spaniards were not amateurs; and they established trade routes-- and trade routes were the easiest way to get there. And I say that that fact is highly significant; because in making this crossing, they passed upthe question of navigation on the San Juan River. They had another opportunity on the Colorado River for water navigation; and they passed that up. And they came to the Green River, and they had another opportunity for water navigation, and they passed that up. Had these rivers been navigable, they had a water route of three hundred or four hundred miles down here ( indicating on map) to the mouth of the Virgin River. And yet no Spaniard ever navigated, or ever attempted any navigation, down any one of these rivers. Coming down to the American history connected with these 1974 |
