Show 147 Q Does the Government maintain at Greenriver a gauging station? A Yes, sir. Q Just tell us, please, what is a gauging station, and what is its purpose, and the apparatus used? A A gauging station is maintained for the purpose of determining the daily flow, and from that the monthly and yearly run- off, of any stream at any point. The equipment consists of a guage, which formerly was a staff gauge, but now, in general, is a recording gauge, from which the heights of the river are obtained. In connection with the gauging station, measurements are made of the discharge. The discharged is measured by determining the width, the depth and the velocity. and knowing the width, depth and the velocity, the discharge in cubic feet per second is obtained. When that is referred to a gauge height, some sort of relation is obtained from which the daily flow throughout the year is obtained. Now, the Geological Survey maintains gauging stations on all the rivers of the country, and in connection with those has maintained on at Greenriver, Utah. Q Well, this recording instrument that you refer to, does that record hourly, or constantly, or how is it? A The continuous height of the water, the same as the temperature graph might record the temerpature; the continuous 2108 |
