Show Host to Conference TeamsA RARE treat was offered Salt Lake fans of the track **â- and field sport when the Universty of Utah held three important collegiate tournies in her own stadium, opening with a Brigham Young university meet, doing bigger things in the way of the state carnival, and staging the crowning event of intermountain spring festivities, the Rocky Mountain Conference joust. This was the first time the R. M. C. affair was ever held in Salt Lake.Utah is about to propose a plan whereby the conference field joust would rotate from year to year, moving from the University of Colorado and Boulder, Denver unversity, and the University of Utah, each school taking the meet every third year.Judging from the interest of down-town folk, Utah is logically a center of track and field enthusiasm. The university itself is a haven for developement of new timber and a place where everyone has a chance. The Ute premier two-miler, Wilton I vie, for example, never thought of donning spikes until 1928. With a chance and a lending hand from Ike Armstrong, I vie trained, tried, and ranâ€"and conquer he did, too. There's a slender athlete by the name of Harvey Hansen who went out for distance running in 1929, just to build up his physique. Now he's so enthusiastic about the idea of trying to beat the other fellow, outside of keeping in trim, that he seems likely to plug along until he breaks into the point-getting column, and that time is likely not be be far distant. There's a law student by the name of Harry Metos who can run and toss the weights. Harry never knew what he could do with the discus until 1929, and then he won his letter.COACH PETERSON-uâ- ""NATE LONG Sprints and QuarterLES GILLETTESprintsWILTON I VIE Two Mileâ- mmmmjmimLf^©^^^©^^$^c:6§s^i'iiOne hundred thirty-seven |
