Given May 22, under the direction of Professor Giles of the Music Department, it proved to be one of the most successful ever presented. The scene of the opera is in California, near Santa Barbara, so called from the name of the heroine of the opera, Barbara. Paul, an attractive young naval officer, is in love with Barbara. The opera centers around their love and the love of lovely Natoma for Paul. Natoma, a pure blood Indian maiden and the daughter of the chief, is a last of her race. Natoma's song of fate, one of the most appealing things in the entire opera closes the last scene, with the unhappy Natoma leaving Barbara and Paul to receive the benediction of the priest Peralta. This production was received with more enthusiasm and praise than probably any other of a similar nature ever staged by the the University.afcThree hundred |
