Show ROD MORTENSEN, ARCHITECT 778 WEST 3800 SOUTH BOUNTIFUL, UT 84010 (801) 292-4266 T WWW .AFFORDABLEARCHITECT .COM THOMAS & ELIZABETH WHITAKER HISTORIC HOME & MUSEUM THE CENTERVILLE CITY CORPORATION 250 NORTH MAIN STREET CENTERVILLE, UT January 25. 2006 To the Centerville City Historic Committee and Government: REHABILITATION RECOMMENDATIONS: EXTERIOR: 1. c. 1960 FAMILY ROOM & GARAGE ADDITION: Removal of this addition is such a substantial change that it comes with a risk of compromising the existing c. 1862 fieldstone building and the c. 1880 brick addition. If the city opts to remove the addition then all possible precautions must be taken to insure that no compromise is made to these earlier historic structures. The southeast corner of the c. 1880 rear addition is of particular concern as It has been wholly replaced with modern materials and would be difficult to remove and to then restore the original wall and corner. Since this addition was made of brick. it is unlikely that any brick similar to the original could be found to replace the missing wall and corner. Sadly. I believe that this restoration will be both costly and dangerous to the rest of the structure since It Is Invasive to the existing structures in so many ways. If removed. this will also take away the easy access to the maintenance and protection of the underside of the historic structures. Otherwise. the structure of the original house and subsequent additions is currently strong and true . Proper maintenance will keep this in check. 2. BAY WINDOW: The optional designs for this rectangular bay are just a guess as to what may have been there. The existing addition. on the other hand. although perhaps not as beautiful as the earlier wings. is an actual part of the history of this building. Maintaining it with some alterations to provide interpretation and to enhance the experience for the period in which it was created may be the best representation of the history of this entire structure. 3 . c. 1960 GARAGE DRIVEWAY: When the parking is configured to the south of the museum. access should be maintained to the existing garage if it remains. This access should have a steeper slope to the south (minimum 114":12") to maintain a flow of moisture away from the garage floor and the Interior stair to the basement. Also a rubber gasket should be placed on the bottom of the garage door to further protect the garage from moisture creeping in. 4 . PORTE-COCHERE / c. 1910 GARAGE: The evidence Is strong that this field stone and sandstone archway probably began as a porte-cochere (an entrance gateway to the side yard meant for carriages and later for motorized vehicles). It is unclear however whether or not it was originally covered. When the brick addition was done in c. 1910. brick was placed over this opening and 1 |
