Which fhews,how well Nature hath adapted a Plant of fo mild a Taffe, either by fimilitude of parts,for the carrying off of anypreternatural Acid 5 or by contrariety, for the curbing of an exorbitant Sait. The Barque of the Root of common Worsmood,which imprefleth a pertinaceous anddiffufive T4/fe, which defcendeth from the Towgue into the Gulet, as is before deferibed ; maybe juftly ranked with the moft excellent Stomachicks 5 and upontryal, I find it one ofthe beft: befides, that it is neither unpleafant, nor affeteth the Head, as the Leavs. Yet the Gardener, and every Body throws it away, as goodfor nothing. ; I fhall conclude with one note, which is this; That the Specifick Virtue of Medicines, which fome Phyficians pofitively deny, and moft difpute 5 from fome ofthe forementioned Differences of Tafte, as well as for other reafons, may feem, at leaft, to be probable. For why fhould nota Afedicine make an Impreffion upon one Part, and not upon another, within the Body, as well as we find it doth within the Mouth ¢ efpecially, fince the Parts of the Adouth, are ofa lefs different Nature, than fome ofthe Vifcera, An Appendix, Lea. VL of Tats Smell betwixt that of Sweat and Urize. 2 7) Of Coriander, when green and young, ftink fo bafely, that they canhardly be endur’d. Sometimes the Leavs have a ftronger Swel/, than the Flower, as in Borage, and fometimes the Stalk, a ftronger than the Leaws, as in Ulwaria. 6. §. Rue Leavs corked upin a bottle and fet in a CeWar for about ten weeks, fmell like Spirit of Harts Horn, or of Urine. The green Leaves of Rofes infufed in water,have a mild, but pleafant Swell, Neither is that of Savive unpleafant, upon the like Infufion. 7- §. Scurvygrafs Juyce kept about 3 ofa year in bottles, with the green Sedement, ina warm Room,{tinks like Humane Excrements. And Scuroygrafs Wine, made only of the Fuyce, {mells like fome Ifues. 8. §. The Flowers of Yarrom, {mell not much unlike to thofe of Southernwood. And the Flowers of Crowfoot almoft like thofe of Scurwygrafs. Some Flowers are of a weaker Smell inthe Bud, as thofe of Mallow. But many havea ftronger, than when they are blown open; as thole of Lavender, Rofemary, &c. 9. §. The Buds of Vervaine Mallow, while they are young, and the Flowers unfeen, havea very pleafant Swell, like that of Geraniune Mofchatum : but when afterwards they are opened they have an unpleafant Swell. Common Mallow Flowers dryed and bottled up for fome time, acquire, though nota ftrong, yet very noyfom Swell. Io. §. The Purple Pouch of Dragon which covers the Seed, being broken,finells juft like a Lob/ter. But permitted to lie in a warm Room for fome days, fimells exadtly like Carrion, and {cents the Room with the fame Swell. Of the ODOURS of Plants. HE Senjes of Tafting and Smelling being fo nearly ally'd; many things already explained concerning the Diverfities and Canfes of Tafts in Plants, may eafily be transferr'd to thofe of their Odours. I fhall nowtherefore only remarque fome particulars, a1. §. Some Seeds as thofe of Cumine, Daucus, being powdered and laped up only in Papers, do notwith{tanding retein their Sel). But many others, as of Sweet Fevil, in a fhort time, lofe it. Some Sceds, when they firft begin to {prout, become Odorows, which were not fo before; asthe GardeBean. not commonlytaken notice of hitherto, and leave “them as a Specimen to be Improved by other Hands. §. 2. The Root of Rape-Crowfoot being cut, and held to the Noe, when it is newly taken out of the Grovzd, {melleth almoft like Spirit of Sal Armoniac, or frefh Scuroygrafs Fuyce. And hath the pro- perty of making the Eyes to water, as Onionsdo, Horfe-Radifh Root is not fo Pungent to the Nofe,but gets pretty muchinto the Eyes. But that of Dragon, dothneither affect the Eyes, nor the Nofé, 3. §. The Succulent Roots of Dogftones, and moft of that Tribe, have a ranck Smell. And that of Crown Imperial, being rub’da little, imells as like a Fox, asone Fox fmelleth like another, 4. §. The Root ofPatience digefted with Water, in a warm Room, for the fpace of three weeks, fmels like Spirit of Harts Horn, or other o tre. s Spirit. Of Red Dock, almoft like Aquafortis or Spirit of Ni- That of Dragoz bottled up with Water, and fet ina Cellar, about a Month,ftinks like the pus of the moft Fetid Ulcer. Atthe end offive Months, more abominably, thaneither to be endured or exprefled. _ 5: $+ The Leavs of Mountaiz Calamint, fmell like Peny Royal. Of Yellow Lamium, like a Balfame.
