Show ~ThePreface. Not long after, I received a Curious and Learned Book from Monf. Dodart, Archiater to the Prince of Conde, and Fellow of the Royal Academy at Paris ; in perfuance of whofe Order, it was by him compofed and publithed.. Which being a Defign ofa like Import, I was gladto fee it fo far juftify’d bythat Iluftrious Society, as well as by our own. In this Idea, one principal Thing I infift upon, for a Philofophical Hiftory of Plants,is Anatomy. And, agreeing to the Method therein propofed,all the Obfervations conteinedin the Fir/t Book , except one or two, were made with the Naked Eye. To the end, I mightfirft give a proof, Howfarit was poffible for us to go, without the help of Glafes: which many Ingenious Men want; and more, the patienceto managethem. For the Truth of thefe Obfervations, Seignior Malpighi, having procured my Book to be tranflated into Latin for his private ufe, fpeaks his own fenfe, infome of his Letters to Mr. Oldenburge, printedat the end of his Anatomy of Plants. And fome of them, have fince been confirmed, both by our Learned Country-men Dr. Wallis, and oh Lifer and bythe Ingenious Mr. Lewenboeck, aroad. Having thus begunwith the bare Eye I next proceeded to the ufe of the Microfcope. The Firft Book, -a little after it came forth; was tranflated into the French Zongue, by Monf: Le Vaffeur an Ingenious Gentlemanin Paris; elegantly, andin the Judgment of thofe who are well skilled in that Language, with muchexactnefs, as to the’ fenfe. He having taken fpecial care, to have all the difficulties of our own, by Me, cleared to him. Andina late Book Entituled, Philofophia vetus & nova printed at Noriberg 1682. the Learned Authorfeemsto have made ufe ofthis Tranflation, for all that he hath taken notice ofin that myFirft Book, By the Ingenious Collectors of the German Ephemerides, both my Firft, Second, and Third Books, are all publifhed in Latine. But their unskilful Interpreter doth oftenfail of the Grammatical Senfe. Whofe Errors, ma- ny ofthemverygrofs, I defire may be imputedneither to them, nor to my felf. Befides: thefe, the Second Lefture of Mixture is alfo a Learned tranflated into French, by Monf.
