None of thele E/ential Cryftals have any hot fiery Tafe, but are very mild, and fenfibly Bitter 5 efpecially, about the Root of the Tongue: as is alfo obfervable of fome Plants hereafter mentioned, in {peaking of the different Ta/fes of Plants. 13. §. Oyl of Vitriol droped upon thefe Cryffals doth notaffect themin the leaft: yet droped into the feveral Solutions out of which the Cryffals are produced, immediatelycaufeth a great Effervefcence. t4. §. Ofthe Solutions above named, that, of Salt of Tartar was the 6 Whereof it is remarquable, That having waited feveral Months together, I could not obferve the leaft Effential Salt to be therein produced in all that time. Whether there be any other Vege- table Salts, befides this of Tartar, which will not yield the Efential above defcribed, I have not yet experimented. 15. §. Inthe mean time, from the Premifes it is very probable, that moft of them afford more or fewer of the faid Cryfals. In regard they are Plants of a very different kind, which I made tryal upon: as Garden Scurvygrafs, very Hot 5 Rofemary, very Aromatich. Wormwood very Bitter. 5 Black Thorne, Aftringent and Sower, And it isalfo plain, That the {aid £/ential Salts contained in the Lixivial, are not altogether one and the fame, but ofdiversSorts. 16. ¢. ABOUT 7 or 8days after the Effential Crystals were produced; the Marine Salt did alfo begin to fhoot; firft in Rofemary; quickly after, in Scurvygrafs; Next, in Black Thorn and Wormwood, fc. after the fpace of a weck or 10 days more. Andinall of them with fome difference of Size and Figure. 17. §. The plaineft of all, was that produced out of the Suit of Black Thorn, confitting for the moft part of very {mall Cry/éals, not above the 15‘ of an Inch fquare, as alfo thin, fhaped like a Duch Tile ufed for Chimnies. Many others were very thick, and near to a Cube. Moft of which werea little hollowed in the midle, like a grind- ing Marble or Salt-Celler s and the hollow bounded by 4 plain and equal Sides, all defcending little towards the Centre; and meafured by two crofs Lives, which ftaid upon the four Avgles of the Square 5 and fo cut one the other at Right Axgles. Both which Properties are likewife ufually {een in the Cry/tals of Common Salt. 18. §. In Wormwood, many of thefe Cry/tals, befides the plain ones, were figur'd crofsways like a Dagger-Hilt, Which was fometimes naked, and fometimesinclofed in a {quare and almoft Cubical Box. Manyothers were figur’d into Sprigs made up of four chief Branches ftanding crofswife, and thofe fibbranched; and all the Branches made up of little {quare Cryfals, cluftered together in that Figure. The Sprigy Figure of thefe Cryftals is not accidental, but hath conftantly come after they hadbeen three times diffolved, and the Solution expofed to evaporate. 19. §. The Marine Salt of Rofemary hath alfo fomevariety. For befides the plain ones above defcribed, there are fome thick Syaares, which have alfo a {quare hollow defcending byfive, fix, or feven nar- row fteps, towards the Centre; being in Figure, faving thefe Steps, fomewhatlike the Hoper in a Mill. 20. §. Upona fecond Solution of the fame Salt, there fhoots an- other fort of fquare; whichis not plain on the edges, as the abovenamed, but f{ealloped or florid all round about, not unlike the Leaves of fome Plants. aI. $. THAN ih fh Lea. iv: . Salts of Plants, ax. g. The Cryftals of Marine Salt of Scruoygrafs are fomewhat like to thofe of Rofemary now defcribed. 22. §. As for the Lixivial Salts of Afh and Tartar, thoughifia Month or Five Weeks Space, they yield fome Cryftals of very clear Sale: yet of Marine Salt neither of them yieldeth the leaft particle. So that of thefe Six Lixivial Salts, fc. of Rofemary, Scurvygra/s, Black Thorn, Wormwood, Af and Tartar, all, but that of Tartar, yiclded an Effential salt. And all, but thofe of Ajh and Tartar, yielded a Ma. rine, fach as is above defcribed. All which Sa/ts both Effential and Marine, together with their Models, made of white Alabafire, 1 have here ready to be feen. 33. §. Of thofe that yield thefe salts, or either of them, it is furtherto be noted, That there is a confiderable difference in the Proportion or Quantities which they yield. The Rofemary yields ftore both ofEfential and Marine, but more Efential. Wormwood and Scurvygrafs more Marine. Black Thorn \efs of Either: The Af’ no Marine, and the Tartar neither the Effential nor Marine, as hath been faid. 24. §. From what hath been faid, I deduce only at prefent thefe Three Corallaie. Firft, That a Lixivial Salt, is not only a compoun- ded Body fe. ofSalt, Sulphur, Aer and Earth; but even a Compounded Salt, containing both a Vegetable Nitre, and a true Sea Salt. 23. $. Secondly, That the Expofing of Bodies, in the manner above fhewed, mayjuftly be accounted one Part of Chymiftry hitherto Deficient, and muchfarther to be improved for the Difcovery ofthe Nature of Bodies. For as Nature chiefly compoundeth Bodies by Digefting them, and fo either fhutting out or keeping inthe der: So fhe Dif folveth them by Expofing, and fo neitherfhutting in the Aer, nor keeping it out, but leavingit free to come and go; andthereby to bring, and carry off whatfoever is neceflary for the Separation or Solution of Bodies. For the Sea it {elf (to confine the fimilitude to our prefentcafe) is but as a Great Paz, wherein all kinds of bodies being long expofed, are throughly refolved, ultimately yielding from the reft of their vible Principles, that which wecall Sea Salt. 26. §. Laftly,if by Expofing and Diffolving we can make oneStls then by Compounding and Digefting we may make another, yea any other Salt; either a Fixed of a Volatile,or a Volatile of a Fixed. That isto fay,a Volatile Salt may be fo feparated from other Bodies, as to become Fixed: ora Fixed Salt may be {o mixed with other Bodies as to become Volatile. For that any Salt fhould of it felf become Fixed or Volatile, is a Fixion not grounded upon Experiment. 27. §. As for the Virtue of the Effential Salts above defcribed, I believe they will be found upontryal, not contemptible in fome Cafes.
