Show Book IV. The Anatomy 4. § Thefe Parts differ alfo in their Pofition 5 ftanding fometimes double upon each Pedicil, as in Toad-jiax, Svapdragon, and fomeothers; but ufually fingle, as in Blattaria, Clematis Auftriaca, &c. Sometimes faftned to their Pedicils at their middle, ftooping downafter the man- ner of Poppy and other hanging Flowers 5 as in Spanifh-Broom, Hyfop, Scabeous, Behen, &c. Sometimes they ftand ere&ted, as in Clematis Austriaca, Ladyes-Looking-Glafs, Rape-Crowfoot, &c. Thofe of Coded Arfmart have no Pedicils, but ftand upona large Bafe, 5. §. OF the Pedicils themfelves, it isto be noted, That theyare rarely faftned to the Top of the Repofitory or Café of the Seed, but round about the Bottom. Partly, That hereby they maythebetter intercept andfeparate the Incongruows Parts of the Sap from the Seed. Yet in the Coded Arfiart they ftand at the Top. Which is not the only thing peculiar in that Plavt it being the property thereof, to ejaculate its Seed, upon the leaft touch. Which property feemeth to depend, partly, upon the Pofftion of the faid Pedicils, as fhall be thewed in {peaking of the Seed. 6. §. Thefe seed-like Parts are alfo of different Number. In Great Celandine, Rofe, Rape-Crowfoot, numerous; in Great Plantaine, and fome other Herbs, much more confpicous than the Foliature it lf In Germander-Chickweed, they are always Tio, and no more. Sometimes theyfollow the number of the Leaves, efpecially in the number 53 as in Blattaria, Black Henbean, &c. In Stichwort and Lychnis Sylveftris. they are 10, juft double to the number of the Leaves. 7. §. ; Theydiffer alfo in their Bigve/s, being in fome fmaller Flow- ers, large 5 as in Borage, Ladys-Looking-Glaj3, and others: and in fome larger Flowers, lefs 5 as in the Ro/e. 8. §. ab. 56 26, Butefpecially in their Shape, which is always very Elegant, and with much Variety. In Borage, likethe point of a Spear, In Blattaria, like a Horfe-foooe. 1n Clematis Auftriaca, like the Spatula, wherewith Apothecaries make their Mixtures. In Mallow, like a Head-Roll. In Ayfop, they have one Cleft before; in Blattaria, one round about ; in Water Bettony, one at the Top; in Scabious, they havea double Cleft, one on eachfide; andfo in St. Fohns Wort, Hyofeyamus, and others ; before theyopen,in the Shape of adouble Pur/e, ; g- §. Thefe Parts, are all hollow 3 each being the Theca or Cafe of a great many extreamfmall Particles, either Globular, or otherwife Convex5 but always regularly figur'd. They are all crowded together, and faftned in clofe Ranks, without any Pedicils, to the Infides of the Theca, Tile other leffer Seeds within a greater 5 or after the fame man- ner asin Hyofcyamws and fomeother Plants, the true Seeds themfelves BookIV. ofof Flowers, 11. §. They are alfo of different Bige/s and Figure. Thofe in Snap-dragon, are of the finalleft size I have feen ; being no bigger Tab. 88. through a good Microfcope, than the leaft Cheefé-Mite to the naked Eye. In Plantain, al\fo through a Glafs, like a Scurvy-grafs-feed. In Bears-foot, like a Muflard-feed. In Carwation, like a Turnep-seed. In Bindweed, like a Peper-Corn, Inall thefe ofa Globular Figure, 12. In Devils-bit, they are alfo Round, but depreffed, like the Seed of Goof-grafs, ora Holland Cheefe. In the Bean and all forts of Puls, and Trefayls, as alfo in Blero-bottle, &c. they are Cylindrich. In Orange Tab. 58. Lilly, Oval, one 5ofan Inchlong, like an Avts-Ege. In Deadly-Nightfhade, alfo Oval, but fmaller at both Ends. bick, And thofe of Pancy, Cu- Yn all thefe and the former, they are S~ooth. 13. §. Butin Aalow, Holyoak, and all of that kind, theyare befet round about withlittle Thorzes ; whereby each looks like the Seed- Ball of Roman Nettle, orlike the Fruit of Thorn- Apple, or the Fifhcalled Pifcis orbis minor, or the Murices, wfed antiently in Wars. They are alfo very great, thewing, through a Glas, of the bignefS of a large White Peafe 3 being 200 or 300times biger than thofe in Svapdragon 5 of which there are about a Thoufand in cach Theca, that is, in the {pace of about 1000Cubical Part of an Inch. 15. §. In fome Plants,as in Deadly Night-foade, where thefe Parti- ales are White, they feem, by a very good Gia/s and advantagious Poftion, to be compofed of Parenchymous and Lignous Fibres, {titched up together, as in the other Parts. 15. §. In Colocynthis, (and with fome Avalogy in Wild Cucumer, and E fuppofe all of that kind ) the Aftire is very peculiar, not confifting of feveral little Theca, upon fo many Pedicils, as is defcribeds but is all one entire Part, like a thick Columna in the midft of the Flower5 having feveral little Ridges, and Furrows winding from the Top to the Bottom round about. In the midle of each Ridge runsa Line, where the Shiv, after fometime, opencth intotwo Lips, prefenting the Globylar Particles conteined in the hollowof every Ridge. 16. §. Where the Attire confifts of feveral Seed-like Parts, as is defcribed ; there, another Part diftiné, like a little Colvmna or Pinacle, {tands on the Top of the Uterus or true Seed-Café. Which is alfo regularly and varioufly Figured. In Bindweed, it hath a round Head, like that ofa great Pin, In the CommonBell, St. Johns wort,it is Tab,56,5 7, divided into Three Parts. In Gerarium, into Five 5 In Afarum, into Six. Sometimes, the Head is Smooth, and fometimes befet with little Thorns, asin Ayofiyamus. Of the Ve of thefe Parts, anon. Tab.§ 5,56; 8fOwall round about clofe to the Bed of the Cafés as in Clary, and ab. 57. the Figures nowreferred to,may be feen. And whentheyare ripe, the Cafe allo opens and admits them to the Aer, as the Seed-Cafe doth the Seed. The whole Attire, together with the Foliature and Seed-Cafe, See in one Exampk amongftthe Figures. i _ to. §. The Colour ofthefe {mall Particles conteined in the Theca, is alfo different. But as That is ufually White or reVow, fo are Thefe : fometimes Blewifh 3 but never Red. Andfometimes not of the fame re with that of the Theca. _ Whichfurther thews how {crupulous Nature is, in differencing the Tinctures of the everal Parts. CAHVAUD: |
